Subject Unknown: Portraits of Women by Galveston Artists

Open November 2, 2024 - April 21, 2025

View portraits of known and unknown women from our museum collection in "Subject Unknown."

Throughout history, women have served as muses for artists of all kinds. Often, these women remained nameless, memorialized only through their appearance. For many centuries, those lucky enough to have their portraits painted and their names retained were usually wealthy or happened to be friends or family of the artist.

The portraits in this exhibition span a variety of women, from those whose names and identities are unknown, to those who are well documented in historical records. They are painted and drawn by both women and men. However, they all have one thing in common: they were painted by Galveston artists. By highlighting some of these wonderful local artists, as well as a few of the 100-plus portraits of women in the Rosenberg Library’s collection, we hope to shed some light on an area that often goes overlooked and under-exhibited.

The exhibit is located on the 2nd floor in the Grand Hallway by the 23rd Street entrance to the library. It can be viewed during regular library hours, Mon, Fri-Sat 9:00 am - 6:00 pm and Tues-Thurs 9:00 am - 8:00 pm. No appointment needed.
